The Tri-Axle Lowbed Semi-Trailer: Ghana's Best-Selling Heavy Haulage Configuration

Oct 09, 2026

Why Tri-Axle Dominates in Ghana

In Ghana, the first question when buying a lowbed is simple: tri-axle or four-axle?

The answer is tri-axle. Ghana's lowbed demand sits in the 40–80 tonne range, and the tri-axle is the standard solution for the most common payload segment. Port logistics, mining, and construction drive this market. The most common cargo — excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, crushers — falls into the 30–50 tonne class. Among Chinese suppliers exporting to Ghana, the tri-axle lowbed has the highest shipment frequency.

Three Realities You Face Every Day

1. The Road Is Punishing Your Trailer

The Agona Nkwanta–Tarkwa corridor was rebuilt in 2024. By early 2026, it was severely damaged. Technical assessments found it was subjected to more than three times its design loading. Roads designed to last 10–15 years are failing in under five.

Ghana's mining routes are laterite roads — steep, dusty, slippery. They place extreme demands on frame strength and suspension.

2. Overload Fines Increased 10 Times

In January 2026, the Minister for Roads and Highways announced the penalty would rise from GH₵5,000 to GH₵50,000. The government can also auction excess cargo and confiscate vehicles for repeat offenders.

Ghana enforces axle load reference standards of 10 tonnes for a single axle, 18–20 tonnes for a tandem, and 24–27 tonnes for a tridem.

3. Used Trailers Cost More in the Workshop

Used European trailers are cheaper upfront. But they come with aged frames, worn suspension, and hard-to-find parts. Ghana Standards Authority has announced mandatory PVoC pre-shipment inspection for used vehicles, though implementation has since been paused. New vehicles follow the homologation pathway and are not subject to the same restriction.

What's Changing in Ghana

Two regulatory shifts are worth noting. First, ECOWAS axle load harmonisation is advancing, with nationwide sensitisation already completed in Takoradi, Kumasi, and Tema. Enforcement will tighten. Second, since 2026, drivers of articulated vehicles must hold a Class F licence, be at least 25, and complete 48 hours of certified training. A compliant, standardised trailer reduces reliance on individual driver experience.

On the import side, mining equipment controls have tightened, with thousands of excavators held at ports pending new clearance procedures. The Ghana cedi also stabilised in 2025–2026, reducing uncertainty in import cost and quotation validity.

Our response:

  • Axle load enforcement: Our tri-axle 16-tonne configuration keeps your load distribution within Ghana's reference standards. We help you confirm the right axle setup based on your cargo weight.

  • Class F licences: A standardised, reliable trailer reduces reliance on driver experience. We provide operation and maintenance guides to support your drivers.

  • Mining equipment controls: Our lowbed is built to handle the weight and road conditions of Ghana's mining routes. We match the trailer specification to your equipment weight and route.

  • Cedi stability: Import cost and spare parts pricing are more predictable. Our standardised components are locally available, keeping your maintenance budget under control.

Why Tri-Axle Is the Standard Answer

Payload. Our 13.5m tri-axle lowbed has a 55-tonne rated payload and an 11.5-tonne tare weight. Equipped with 3 × 16-tonne axles and a reinforced main beam, it easily covers Ghana's standard 30–50 tonne excavators and bulldozers, and comfortably handles equipment approaching 60 tonnes. Four axles are only necessary above 60 tonnes.

Compliance. Under Ghana's axle load framework, the tri-axle group carries up to 27 tonnes. At a 55-tonne rated payload, the remaining load sits on the tractor's kingpin. The 16-tonne axle configuration provides ample safety margin, but your tractor unit's fifth-wheel capacity must still be verified. For most operators running 30–50 tonne equipment, this tri-axle stays comfortably within the compliant range.

Operating cost. One less axle means fewer tires, lower suspension maintenance, and simpler parts management. With parts supply concentrated in Accra/Tema and Kumasi, availability directly affects downtime.

One of Our Most Popular Tri-Axle Models for Ghana

This 13.5m tri-axle lowbed is one of our most popular models for the Ghanaian market, built with a heavy-duty specification that matches the mainstream demand for transporting 30–50 tonne equipment on mining and construction routes.

ConfigurationWhy It Matters in Ghana
3 × 16-tonne axlesProvides ample load redundancy with industry-standard safety margin at the 55-tonne rated payload.
Reinforced main beam (Top 18mm / Bottom 20mm / Web 12mm)Built to withstand the impact of laterite ruts and heavy loads on Ghana's mining roads.
Heavy-duty leaf spring suspensionStrong load-bearing, easy to repair locally, ideal for gravel and laterite.
12 × 12R22.5 tubeless tiresMainstream size for heavy trailers in Ghana, locally available.
JOST 90# kingpin + WABCO brake valveMatches mainstream tractors in Ghana, reliable braking.

Specifications for this model: 13.5m length. Rated payload 55 tonnes. Tare weight 11.5 tonnes. Gross vehicle weight 66.5 tonnes.

13.5m 3-Axle Low Bed Trailer

Compliance: Ready from the Factory

Ghana enforces axle load reference standards of 10 tonnes single, 18–20 tonnes tandem, and 24–27 tonnes tridem. This 55-tonne rated tri-axle lowbed features 3 × 16-tonne axles, providing sufficient safety margin when loaded to its rated capacity. However, actual loading must always respect axle load limits and the tractor's fifth-wheel capacity.

ECOWAS axle load harmonisation is progressing. A compliant tri-axle configuration means no vehicle replacement when regulations are fully enforced.

The Bottom Line

Ghana's mining roads will not improve soon. Overload fines will not go back down. A new tri-axle lowbed built for Ghana is not the cheapest on the invoice — but it is the optimal solution for compliant trips, minimal downtime, and easy parts sourcing.
